My wife likes to remind me that there are things in life you just cant control. I remind her that I “Fish” for a living, therefore, I get it. Which brings me to the past week of fishing. So much rain over the last week or so finally caught up to us and the awesome Shark bite that we had going on just up and dried out. I mean they all but disappeared. Vanished overnight. Most species within a few miles of land went to deeper water and further out to get away from all of the freshwater runoff. When the Sharks stop chewing and the Jacks are nowhere to be seen in the bay, you know that there is way to much freshwater in the area. After a tortuous day of fishing last weekend, I made the move and headed out about 6 miles off the beach in search of any kind of activity the following day. I usually stay within a couple miles of shore, but with the bite being non-existent, I didn’t have much choice. We ended up scoring. Despite the rain storms, the ocean has been calm, clear, and just beautiful all week and offered up some fun ultra-light action. Plenty of action for Spanish Mackerel with most of em weighing nearly 5 lbs or so. No runts or bacon strips. Every Mackerel was a “Mongo”, that when hooked, nearly spooled the spinning reel. I cant remember seeing so many “large”Mackerel. We also caught Blues and even a few Jacks on some way under-gunned tackle. While we did get spooled a few times and broke some fish off, it really was rewarding when we would get em to the boat. Most were let go, but there were some that ended up on the dinner table. All said, a pretty fun week. I cant always control things, but sometimes mother/nature provides you with a few options. This coming weekend looks to be wet while next weeks weather is a total crap shoot. I’m gonna work on reels and freshen up some line, as well as wax a couple of surfboards. Fish or Surf? I got options.
